Colt

1983 – 1994

The Plymouth Colt was a line of subcompact captive imports built by Mitsubishi and sold in the United States from 1983 to 1994, taking over from the Champ. It was a rebadged front-wheel-drive Mitsubishi Mirage, offered as a hatchback, sedan and wagon with Mitsubishi four-cylinder engines. It was a fuel-efficient, affordable entry point in Plymouth's lineup. Dodge sold the same cars under the same name.

The Story

Why the Colt matters

This is the front-drive, Mitsubishi Mirage based Plymouth Colt, which took over from the Champ as the Plymouth badge on the Mirage from the 1983 model year; the rear-drive Colts of the 1970s are a separate line. Dodge sold the same cars. The GTS Turbo of 1984 used a 1.6-litre turbo four rated at 102 hp, and the Twin Stick gearbox was offered on it. By 1993 the line used a 1.5-litre four with 92 hp, with a 1.8-litre of 113 hp optional. Dodge and Plymouth dropped the Colt sedans and coupes after the 1994 model year, with the Neon taking over in the United States.
