Chrysler unveiled the Neon at the 1993 Frankfurt show and planned to put it on sale in January 1994 as a 1995 model, with production starting in November 1993 at Belvidere, Illinois. It was sold in the United States as a Plymouth and as a nearly identical Dodge, powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Chrysler reported that it went from concept to production in 31 months at a cost of $1.3 billion, and before launch it expected a price of about $8,000. The Plymouth Neon was sold from 1995 to 2001, with a second generation from 2000. The final Neon built under the Plymouth name, assembled on June 28, 2001, was also the last Plymouth ever made.
The Plymouth Neon was a front-wheel-drive compact car launched for 1995. It shared its platform and cheeky, friendly styling with the Dodge Neon. Its standard 2.0-liter four made a class-leading 132 hp, with a 150-hp DOHC version in the Sport and ACR models. It was marketed with a memorable 'Hi.' advertising campaign, and it was youthful, affordable and fun to drive. It remained one of Plymouth's core models until the brand's 2001 shutdown.
