STORY

Plymouth's Duster arrived for 1970 as a two-door coupe built on the Valiant compact, sharing the Valiant's front sheet metal with new bodywork behind the cowl. The performance version was the Duster 340, whose 340-cubic-inch V8 carried a 275 hp rating on the gross basis then in use. The Twister appearance package followed in 1971 and gave cheaper engines the 340's look. For 1974 a 360 V8 replaced the 340, and that year the Duster had its best sales, at about 281,000. The car was dropped after the 1976 model year, as the Volare and its Dodge twin, the Aspen, took over.
