STORY

The Aztek went on sale in summer 2000 as a 2001 model, built at Ramos Arizpe in Mexico on a shortened GM minivan platform. Pontiac called it a sport recreational vehicle, and it was the first Pontiac-badged SUV sold in the US and Mexico. Front-wheel drive came first, and the Versatrak all-wheel-drive system followed later in the 2001 model year. GM targeted 50,000 to 70,000 sales a year and needed 30,000 to break even, but the best year, 2002, brought only 27,793. The last Aztek left the line in December 2004, and the Torrent replaced it after the 2005 model year.
