STORY
The Fiero was the first mass-produced rear mid-engine car by an American maker, sold as a two-seat Pontiac. Production began in August 1983 for the 1984 model year, with a 2.5-liter Iron Duke four rated for 50 mpg highway on the economy-ratio option. It was the Official Pace Car of the 1984 Indianapolis 500 and made the Car and Driver Ten Best list. The GT with a 140 hp 2.8-liter V6 came in January 1985, and the fastback followed in 1986. By the summer of 1987 fires had hit roughly one in 400 of the 1984 cars sold, and the Fiero ended after 1988 with 370,168 built.
