STORY

Pontiac introduced the Grand Am in the fall of 1972 as a 1973 model, a rear-drive intermediate offered with 400 and 455 cubic inch V8s, and dropped it after 1975 as sales fell. A downsized version ran from 1978 to 1980. The name came back for 1985 on a front-drive N-body compact that replaced the Phoenix, and the 2.3-litre Quad 4 was offered from 1988. The 1999 to 2005 generation was the last; the car was phased out in 2005 for the G6, and US sales that year were 31,613.
