STORY

Pontiac gave the name J2000 to its front-wheel-drive J-body compact for 1982. It replaced the rear-drive Sunbird, which had been sold from the 1976 model year through 1980. The name lasted one year: for 1983 the car was called simply 2000, for 1984 the whole line was sold as the 2000 Sunbird, and plain Sunbird returned for 1985. Engines over the generation were 1.8 L and 2.0 L four-cylinders, and the J-body generation, which ran to 1987, eventually covered coupe, convertible, hatchback, sedan and wagon bodies.
