STORY
The first Tempest arrived for the 1961 model year as Pontiac's compact, and Motor Trend named it Car of the Year for 1961. It carried a rear transaxle linked to the front engine by a flexible driveshaft, and its Trophy 4 four-cylinder was built from the right bank of the 389 cubic inch V8. For 1964 the name moved to a larger, conventionally driven mid-size car, on which a GTO option was offered for 1964 and 1965 before it became a separate model in 1966. The original line ended after 1970. From 1987 to 1991 Pontiac used the name again in Canada on a rebadged Chevrolet Corsica.
