STORY

The 911 GT3 R is Porsche Motorsport's customer racing car built to the FIA GT3 technical formula, the category sold to privateer teams for GT championships worldwide. Positioned below the factory-run GTE/RSR and prototype programmes, it lets independent squads campaign a 911 in series such as the IMSA WeatherTech and GT World Challenge championships and the great endurance classics at the Nürburgring, Spa and Bathurst. Succeeding the 997-based GT3 R, the model was reworked in step with the road car's generations. The first 991 version (2016-2018) carried a rear-mounted, water-cooled 4.0-litre flat-six of roughly 500 hp, derived from the 911 GT3 RS and RSR family and paired with a paddle-shift sequential gearbox. The 991.2 revision (2019-2022) enlarged the engine to 4.2 litres for about 550 hp and moved the powerplant slightly forward for better weight distribution, with revised aerodynamics improving both outright pace and drivability for the gentleman drivers who make up much of the GT3 grid; it took class wins at 24-hour events including the Nürburgring. The current 992 car (2023-2026) debuted for the 2023 season with a 4,194 cc flat-six producing around 565 hp at up to 9,250 rpm, an aluminium-steel composite structure clad almost entirely in carbon-fibre panels, and a chassis engineered to offer performance reserves across varying Balance-of-Performance windows.
