STORY

The 912 was the affordable way into the new Porsche. Launched in 1965 to sit below the pricier six-cylinder 911, it wrapped the fresh 911 body around the proven 1.6-litre flat-four carried over from the outgoing 356, giving buyers the look and feel of the icon for less money.

Far from a poor relation, it was a delight to drive. The lighter four-cylinder engine sat less weight over the rear, giving the 912 sweeter balance than early 911s, and its frugal, willing nature won a loyal following. For several years it actually outsold the 911.

Discontinued in 1969 as the 914 took over entry-level duties, it briefly returned as the 912E in 1976. Long overlooked, the 912 is now valued as a lightweight, honest and increasingly collectible piece of 911 history.
