Here's Why the Porsche 918 Spyder is Worth $1.7 Million

STORY

The 918 Spyder was Porsche's contribution to the "Holy Trinity" of hybrid hypercars, alongside the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari, and its case that electrification could make cars faster, not tamer. Built from 2013 to 2015, it was strictly limited to 918 examples.

At its heart sat a 4.6-litre V8 derived from Porsche's LMP racing engines, spinning to over 9,000 rpm and paired with two electric motors for a combined output near 887 hp and full electric-only running. It could reach around 214 mph, yet plug in and creep silently through town.

In 2013 a Weissach-package 918 lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:57, the first street-legal production car under seven minutes. It reset expectations of what a hybrid could be and forecast the electrified performance cars that followed.
