STORY

The Carrera RSR was the full-competition evolution of the road-going 911 Carrera RS 2.7, prepared by Porsche's racing department to contest international GT and sports-car events. The first cars used an enlarged 2.8-litre flat-six and announced themselves immediately, taking overall victory at the 1973 Daytona 24 Hours in the hands of Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood and winning the 1973 Targa Florio with Herbert Müller and Gijs van Lennep. For 1974 the engine grew to 3.0 litres and the bodywork gained the distinctive wide arches and larger rear wing, further cementing the car's status in endurance and national championship racing. RSRs were run by both the factory and a large number of privateer teams, making the model a fixture of grids on both sides of the Atlantic. Its success established the naturally aspirated 911 as a genuine outright-capable race car and laid the groundwork for the turbocharged 934 and 935 that followed.
