Cayenne Turbo GT

9YA/E3 · 2023–presentAWDCoupe

The facelifted Cayenne Turbo GT is the petrol-only halo Coupé of the 9YA.2 range: a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 tuned to 485 kW (659 PS), all-wheel drive and an eight-speed Tiptronic S, with a 3.3 s sprint to 100 km/h with the Sport Chrono package and a 305 km/h top speed. It sits 15 mm lower than a standard Coupé and keeps the fixed carbon rear wing, titanium exhaust and ceramic brakes of the original 2021 car, which it replaced with 19 PS more. Porsche does not sell it in the EU, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Taiwan or Singapore, where the Turbo E-Hybrid with GT Package fills the top slot instead. It is a different car from that plug-in hybrid.

STORY

The Cayenne is the car that made everything else possible. When it arrived for 2003, purists were appalled that Porsche would build an SUV at all. Commercially it was a very smart move: it turned a niche sports-car maker into one of the most profitable companies in the industry.

It was developed together with the Volkswagen Touareg but engineered with real Porsche intent. It drove and accelerated unlike any SUV before it. Turbocharged versions could beat sports cars, while still carrying a family and towing a trailer. Buyers who would never fit into a 911 flocked to it.

Its profits paid for the continued development of the 911, the Boxster and Cayman, and Porsche's motorsport and hypercar programmes. Whether you like it or not, the Cayenne saved the company financially and became its commercial backbone.
