1994 Porsche 968 Coupe: Driving the last 4-cylinder Transaxle Porsche

YouTube

STORY

The 968 was the transaxle line's swansong, and its finest hour. Arriving in 1991 and built, unusually, at Porsche's own Zuffenhausen works, it was a comprehensive reworking of the 944 rather than an all-new car, sharing only a fraction of its predecessor's parts.

Under the smoother, 928-inspired nose sat a 3.0-litre four, one of the largest four-cylinders of its day, fitted with Porsche's VarioCam variable valve timing to make 240 PS. The result was a refined, torquey, superbly balanced sports car, with the hardcore, lightweight Club Sport becoming a cult classic.

Expensive to build and overshadowed by a recession, the 968 sold in small numbers before ending in 1995, closing the front-engine four-cylinder chapter. Rare and increasingly prized, it is remembered as the era's most complete car.
