STORY

Renault's 18i reached the United States in early 1981 and was sold through American Motors dealers. In February 1981 the Christian Science Monitor reported that Renault held a controlling financial interest in AMC and that the lack of a viable dealership-service network had hurt. The US cars were fuel injected and, at that point, came only as a four-door sedan and a four-door wagon, with a two-door sedan promised for the autumn. The same report said AMC and Renault were already working on a joint car for the Kenosha, Wisconsin, plant for the 1983 model year, and that car became the Alliance, introduced in September 1982.
