STORY

The Renault 5 went on sale in France in 1972 and reached the United States in 1976, first under its own name in bare TL and better-equipped GTL trim. Early cars had a 1.3-litre four rated at 58 hp. The name Le Car arrived with the 1977 advertising and replaced the plain 5. A deal with American Motors, announced in 1978, put the cars from 1979 into AMC's network of about 1,300 dealers. The 1983 model year was the last for the Le Car in America.
