STORY
Renault launched the 16 in 1965 with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine (1,470 cc) of 55 hp. In 1966 it was named Car of the Year, ahead of the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, and Hagerty calls it the first French car to win the award. The TS arrived in 1968, an automatic gearbox arrived in 1969 on the TA version and across the range from 1972, and the TX of 1973 raised output to 93 hp. Production ended in 1980, a fifteen-year run, after more than 1.8 million cars.
