Renault launched the R17 coupe in 1971 as the upmarket, sporty version of the 15, built on the R12 front-wheel-drive platform with the same fastback body. The fuel-injected R17 TS made 108 PS DIN. In 1974 the R17 TS was renamed the 17 Gordini after the 12 Gordini ended, and that year the 17 won the Press-on-Regardless round of the World Rally Championship. A second series with a new front end came in March 1976, and in 1979 production stopped, with the Fuego taking over.
The upmarket, sporty fastback coupe of the 1970s based on the R12, sold alongside the Renault 15 and renamed 17 Gordini in 1974.
