STORY

Renault began building the Vel Satis in 2001 as a five-door hatchback and built it at Sandouville in Normandy. Output was tiny that first year, 412 cars, and reached 21,945 in 2002, the best year of the run; in Poland the first cars were sold that spring. Sales then declined, and the last Vel Satis left Sandouville in October 2009. The run totalled 62,201 cars. In the UK fewer than 1,300 were sold, roughly a third of what Renault UK had expected.
