The 550 debuted at the 2008 Beijing show as Roewe's mid-size sedan. It was developed by SAIC's team together with former Rover engineers at the consultancy Ricardo, from the MG Rover RDX60 project that was unfinished when MG Rover collapsed, so it is indirectly related to the Rover 75 platform. The plug-in hybrid e550 went on sale in China in November 2013. A restyled hatchback version was sold as the MG6, and the 550 itself was rebadged as the MG 550 in several markets.
