Astra

2008 – 2009

The Saturn Astra was a rebadged version of the European Opel Astra H, imported from Belgium and sold in the United States for the 2008 and 2009 model years. Offered as a three-door and five-door hatchback with a 1.8-liter Ecotec four-cylinder, it brought European hatchback dynamics to Saturn showrooms but arrived just as GM began winding the brand down.

The Story

Why the Astra matters

The Saturn Astra was a captive import: a Belgian-built Opel Astra H that Saturn fitted with its own grille, side marker lights, US bumpers and badges. Saturn showed it at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2007, and it went on sale as a 2008 model. The five-door came as XE or XR, while the three-door was offered only as XR. A single 1.8-liter Ecotec four-cylinder drove it, rated at 138 hp (a 2007 preview had quoted 140 hp), with a five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic. After 2009 GM stopped importing it, and the Saturn brand itself closed in 2010.
