Saturn's SL was the four-door sedan of the S-series, the compact range whose first car was built at Spring Hill, Tennessee, on July 30, 1990, and which went on sale as a 1991 model. Sedans divided by engine into the single-cam SL1 and the twin-cam SL2, both 1.9-liter fours with a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic. The side panels were rustproof plastic while hoods, trunklids and roofs stayed steel. The first series ran from 1991 to 1995, with a redesigned S-series following for 1996.
The Saturn SL was the base sedan of the S-series and the first Saturn to reach customers when production began in 1990. With its dent-resistant polymer panels, no-haggle pricing and a 1.9-liter SOHC engine, it reflected Saturn's promise of being 'a different kind of car company.'
