The SF5 was the first production car from Seres, the EV venture set up by Chongqing Sokon in 2016 with a Silicon Valley engineering base as SF Motors. It was launched in China in 2019 as a mid-size SUV with battery-electric and range-extender powertrains, and at first it sold poorly. In April 2021 it was relaunched as the Huawei Smart Selection SF5, the first car sold through Huawei's retail stores, with Huawei's HarmonyOS cockpit and DriveONE electric drive. This collaboration was the direct forerunner of the AITO brand. AITO's M5 later took over its role.
The Seres SF5 is the company's first modern SUV, a mid-size crossover launched in 2019 when SF Motors renamed itself Seres. It was sold as a high-performance dual-motor battery-electric model with up to roughly 684 hp and a 0-100 km/h time near 3.5 seconds, and as a range-extended (EREV) version with a small gasoline engine topping up a smaller battery. In April 2021 it became the first Huawei Smart Selection vehicle, sold through Huawei's flagship stores and fitted with Huawei electronics and infotainment. The SF5 prepared the ground for the Seres-Huawei partnership, which soon produced the separate AITO brand.
