1000 Sport (twin carb)

Subaru 1000 · 1967–1969FWD

The 1000 Sport was the livelier version of Subaru's first sedan, sold in Japan from 1967 to 1969. Two carburettors on its 977 cc EA53 flat-four raise output to 67 PS, compared with 55 PS for the standard 1000. It keeps front-wheel drive and a manual gearbox, in a small, light body from the earliest days of Subaru's boxer engines.

STORY

The Subaru 1000 was launched in 1966 as the first Subaru with a water-cooled boxer engine and front-wheel drive, a layout that would define the brand for decades. Its EA-series flat-four and compact packaging made it a technically advanced small sedan for its era. It later evolved into the FF-1, which carried the front-engine, front-drive formula forward until the Leone replaced it.
