Brat 1.8

Brat (AT/AB) · 1981–1987AWD

The Brat 1.8 is the US-market version of the Leone-based ute with the larger EA81 engine, which followed the 1.6-litre EA71 in the early 1980s. It makes 73 hp (SAE) from 1.8 litres and keeps a manual gearbox, with front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive selectable. The rear jump seats were its way around the US truck tariff.

STORY

The Subaru BRAT (Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter) was a coupe-utility pickup sold in North America from 1978 to 1987, derived from the Leone. To skirt the US 'chicken tax' on imported trucks, it was fitted with rear-facing bed jump seats so it could be classed as a passenger car. It became known for its all-wheel-drive ability and unusual character.
