DL 1.6 4WD Wagon (1st gen)

A22 · 1977–19794WD

The Leone DL 1.6 4WD Wagon was the US version of the first-generation A22 estate with Subaru's optional four-wheel drive, sold from 1977 to 1979. It used the 1.6-litre EA71 boxer four with 67 hp and a manual gearbox. The 4WD wagon dates from 1972 in Japan, and in the US it was offered from 1975, which made it an early all-weather family car.

STORY

The Subaru Leone was a compact car produced from 1971 to 1994, serving as Subaru's mainstream global model and one of the first mass produced four-wheel-drive passenger cars. Sold in sedan, coupe, wagon, and hatchback forms, it spread Subaru's flat-four AWD reputation worldwide, especially in snowy and rural markets. The Impreza replaced it in 1994, with the Legacy covering the larger end of the range.
