GL 1.8 (2nd gen)

AB · 1979–1984FWD

The Leone GL 1.8 is the front-wheel-drive sedan of the second-generation AB line, built from 1979 to 1984 for international markets. It uses a 1.8-litre four-cylinder boxer with about 73 horsepower and a manual gearbox. Next to the 1.6-litre 4WD sedan it traded the extra driven axle for a larger engine, a simple choice for buyers who did not need four-wheel drive.

STORY

The Subaru Leone was a compact car produced from 1971 to 1994, serving as Subaru's mainstream global model and one of the first mass produced four-wheel-drive passenger cars. Sold in sedan, coupe, wagon, and hatchback forms, it spread Subaru's flat-four AWD reputation worldwide, especially in snowy and rural markets. The Impreza replaced it in 1994, with the Legacy covering the larger end of the range.
