The 2.2 is the US-market Outback of 1995 and 1996, powered by the 2.2-litre EJ22E four-cylinder. In 1995 the Outback was little more than a trim level of the Legacy, and in 1996 the 2.2 stayed on with the manual gearbox while automatic cars got the new 2.5. It makes 135 hp and drives all four wheels, the smaller-engined stick-shift way into the Outback.

STORY

The Outback launched in 1994 as a raised version of the Legacy wagon with off-road trim, credited with helping popularize the crossover concept in North America. It grew into a standalone nameplate with permanent symmetrical all-wheel drive and boxer engines, remaining one of Subaru's best-selling models.
