The Legacy Lancaster 2.5 (BH) is the Japanese-market Outback of the first BH phase, sold there as the Legacy Lancaster from 1998. It uses the DOHC 2.5-litre EJ254 with AVCS variable valve timing, rated at 167 PS, rather than the single-overhead-cam EJ25 of the US car. It is an all-wheel-drive automatic wagon, sold in 1999-2001.

STORY

The Outback launched in 1994 as a raised version of the Legacy wagon with off-road trim, credited with helping popularize the crossover concept in North America. It grew into a standalone nameplate with permanent symmetrical all-wheel drive and boxer engines, remaining one of Subaru's best-selling models.
