The international-market 2.5 wagon of the first BH Outback, a generation with more ground clearance than the Legacy estate it came from. A 2.5-litre four-cylinder with about 167 PS drives all four wheels through an automatic gearbox. It is the four-cylinder choice beside the optional flat-six, and was built from 1999 to 2001.

STORY

The Outback launched in 1994 as a raised version of the Legacy wagon with off-road trim, credited with helping popularize the crossover concept in North America. It grew into a standalone nameplate with permanent symmetrical all-wheel drive and boxer engines, remaining one of Subaru's best-selling models.
