Sambar Van 360

K151/K161 · 1961–1966RWD

The Sambar Van 360 is the first-generation Subaru Sambar (K151/K161) in its closed van form, built for Japan from 1961 to 1966. A two-cylinder, 360 cc two-stroke engine sits at the rear and makes 18 PS, driving the rear wheels through a manual gearbox. Independent suspension on all four wheels was unusual for a kei van of that period.

STORY

The Sambar is Subaru's kei truck and microvan, introduced in 1961 with a rear-engine, rear- or all-wheel-drive layout unusual for its class. Prized for traction and packaging, it was built in-house for decades before becoming a rebadged Daihatsu Hijet in 2012.
