Sambar Truck 550 (KR/KT)

KR/KT · 1987–1990RWD

The Sambar Truck 550 (KR/KT) of 1987 to 1990 is the two-valve base pickup of the updated fourth generation, sold in Japan. Its rear two-cylinder EK23 of 544 cc makes 28 PS and drives the rear wheels through a manual gearbox. The 1987 update brought a three-valve engine to the range, but this is the simpler version that stayed with the older two-valve unit.

STORY

The Sambar is Subaru's kei truck and microvan, introduced in 1961 with a rear-engine, rear- or all-wheel-drive layout unusual for its class. Prized for traction and packaging, it was built in-house for decades before becoming a rebadged Daihatsu Hijet in 2012.
