KR/KT · 1987–19904WD

The Sambar Try 4WD of 1987 to 1990 is the four-wheel-drive passenger van of the updated fourth generation, sold in international markets. A 550 cc two-cylinder engine gives about 34 horsepower with a manual gearbox. The 1987 update brought a three-valve engine and full-time four-wheel drive, and it also split the commercial Sambar Van from the Try.

STORY

The Sambar is Subaru's kei truck and microvan, introduced in 1961 with a rear-engine, rear- or all-wheel-drive layout unusual for its class. Prized for traction and packaging, it was built in-house for decades before becoming a rebadged Daihatsu Hijet in 2012.
