Impreza 22B STI

GC8 · 1998–1998AWD

The Impreza 22B STI Version is a two-door widebody coupe that Subaru sold in Japan from March 1998 in a run of 400 cars, after three straight WRC manufacturers' titles. It copies the Impreza World Rally Car of 1997 with wider front and rear fenders, an aluminium bonnet and a large rear wing, all in Sonic Blue. A bored-out 2.2-litre EJ22 turbo boxer makes 280 PS and 363 Nm through a five-speed manual with a driver-controlled centre differential. The list price was 5,000,000 yen before tax.

STORY

The WRX began as the performance turbocharged version of the Impreza in 1992, powered by a turbo boxer engine and symmetrical all-wheel drive that made it well known in rallying and among enthusiasts. Subaru later spun the WRX off as its own model line, with the STI variant serving as the high-performance flagship.
