STORY
The Vitara (Escudo in Japan) debuted in 1988 as a compact ladder-frame SUV that helped make the small recreational 4x4 popular, in short and long bodies. Later generations grew and were joined by the Grand Vitara name. In 2015 the model changed direction to a monocoque crossover on a car-based platform with Suzuki's AllGrip four-wheel drive. In every era it has balanced affordability, capability and compact size.
