Model S P90D

Original (2012-2016) · 2015–2016AWDLiftback

Power is the contested figure here, so the catalogue records the motor sum, 762 hp (503 hp rear plus 259 hp front), consistently with the neighbouring P85D at 691 hp and P100D at 762 hp. Tesla's own order page printed those two motor figures separately and, footnoted as 'battery limited maximum motor shaft power', 463 hp for the standard car, rising to 532 hp with the optional Ludicrous Speed Upgrade, so the shaft number is lower than the motor sum by design. Acceleration likewise came in two forms: 3.1 s 0-60 mph (3.3 s 0-100 km/h) standard and 2.8 s 0-60 mph (3.0 s 0-100 km/h) with Ludicrous. The metric figures of 967 Nm, 250 km/h and 3.3 s come from Tesla's own German page, which rates the same car 510 PS rear and 262 PS front with 469 PS battery-limited, so nothing is converted between standards. EPA range 270 miles. Tesla CTO JB Straubel explained the gap between combined motor power and available battery power in 'Tesla All Wheel Drive (Dual Motor) Power and Torque Specifications', 21 September 2015.

STORY

The Model S launched in 2012 as Tesla's breakthrough luxury sedan, proving a long-range EV could be desirable and setting the template for the modern electric car. Over its life it introduced dual-motor 'D' all-wheel drive, Autopilot hardware, and the Ludicrous-mode P100D. A major 2021 refresh brought a new interior, an optional yoke steering wheel, and the tri-motor Plaid, one of the quickest production cars ever built.
