Trueno GT APEX Hatchback 4A-GEU automatic (JP)

AE86 · 1986–1987RWD

The Trueno GT Apex with the four-speed automatic was a later AE86 option. The 1.6 litre 4A-GEU twin-cam makes 130 PS and 149 Nm and drives the rear wheels. In Japan the automatic was offered only on the post-1985 GT and GT Apex, so this is the self-shifting top Trueno liftback.

STORY

The AE86 was built from 1983 to 1987 as the rear-drive Corolla Levin, with fixed headlights, and the Sprinter Trueno, with pop-up lamps. Both used the 1.6 litre twin-cam 4A-GE. The Japanese version was rated 130 PS gross (JIS), the European version about 124 PS (DIN net) and the North American 4A-GEC 112 hp (SAE net). Keiichi Tsuchiya helped make drifting known with the car, and the manga Initial D, which began in 1995, put the Trueno at its centre. Toyota's 2012 86 coupe took its name from it.
