ZZE122 XS180 (1ZZ-FE)

E120 · 2002–2006FWD

The Allex XS180 is a hatchback of the E120 range, sold in Japan from 2002 to 2006. It was the Toyota Netz Store twin of the Corolla Runx, with small styling differences. Its 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (1ZZ-FE) sends power to the front wheels through an automatic. In Japan the Allex also came with a 1.5-litre engine, so the 1.8 sits above it.

STORY

Allex was the Netz channel's half of a pair, sold next to the Corolla Store's Corolla RunX, and both went on sale on 24 January 2001. Toyota made them by cutting the tail off the ninth-generation Corolla sedan, which left a five-door hatchback 190 mm shorter overall than the saloon and otherwise the same size. The 1.5-litre 1NZ-FE gave 81 kW (110 PS) at 6,000 rpm under codes NZE121 and NZE124, a 1.8-litre 1ZZ-FE was added at the facelift of 19 September 2002, and the RS180 used the 2ZZ-GE at 140 kW (190 PS) at 7,600 rpm as ZZE123 with a six-speed manual. The Netz sedan slot vacated when Sprinter saloon sales ended on 22 December 2000 went to the Platz, while Allex followed the Sprinter Cielo hatchback. Takaoka and Central Motor built the cars until February 2007, and the Auris replaced both on 23 October 2006. Grade and trim, not mechanical changes, separated Allex from its twin.
