NHP10 Crossover

NHP10 · 2017–2021FWD

After the June 2017 facelift, the rugged-looking Aqua variant was renamed Crossover and stayed on sale in Japan until 2021. It keeps the 1.5-litre hybrid at 100 PS with front-wheel drive. Its cladding and higher appearance replace the plain hatchback styling, but the mechanical parts match the standard Aqua.

STORY

Aqua went on sale in Japan on 26 December 2011 as a hybrid one class below the Prius, built as NHP10 around a 1.5-litre 1NZ-FXE rated 54 kW (74 PS) and a compact Toyota Hybrid System II, certified at 35.4 km/L on the JC08 cycle; export markets took the same car as the Prius c. It then became the best-selling car in Japan outside the kei class for three years running, on 262,367 registrations in 2013 and 233,209 in 2014. The second generation followed on 19 July 2021 on the GA-B platform shared with the Yaris, with the three-cylinder 1.5-litre M15A-FXE, 85 kW (116 PS) of system output and the E-Four rear motor as an option. Its headline piece was a high-output bipolar nickel-metal hydride battery, which Toyota claimed as a world first in a production hybrid and credited with roughly twice the output of the earlier pack; the Japanese target was set at 9,800 units a month.
