XL

XX10 · 1994–1999FWD

The XL was the base grade of the first-generation US Avalon, built from 1994 to 1999. A 3.0-litre V6 drives the front wheels through an automatic transmission. The full-size sedan took over the Cressida's role, and the XL was sold below the XLS, which added more equipment.

STORY

The Avalon was shown at the Chicago Auto Show in February 1994 and went on sale as a 1995 model, a front-drive sedan built in Georgetown, Kentucky, with a 3.0-litre V6. The second generation of 1999 also became the Pronard in Japan. A 3.5-litre V6 arrived with the third generation in 2005, and the fourth generation added a hybrid in 2013. In August 2021 Toyota told suppliers that US production would end after the 2022 model year, after sales had fallen to 27,767 in 2019 and 18,421 in 2020. Production for the Chinese market was to continue in Tianjin.
