STORY
Toyota and Daihatsu developed the entry-level three-row MPV together under the programme Toyota called U-IMV, with Toyota's chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa leading the first one, and Astra Daihatsu Motor built it in Indonesia alongside its twin the Daihatsu Xenia. The pair was shown on 11 December 2003 and went on sale in January 2004. The F600 and the F650 that replaced it in November 2011 shared an unusual semi-unibody shell whose front half was body-on-frame, which let the vehicle keep rear-wheel drive and carry heavier loads. The W100 of 10 November 2021 broke with that, moving to Daihatsu's DNGA unibody platform and front-wheel drive, and a Daihatsu chief engineer led it. By November 2018 some 2.75 million Avanza and Xenia had been sold.
