STORY

Toyota's answer to the European mid-size market replaced the Carina E in October 1997 and was built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) in Burnaston as a saloon, a five-door liftback and an estate. The T250 of 2003 reached Japan that October, where it took over from the Vista and the Vista Ardeo and was sold through Toyota Vista Store with a 2.0-litre 1AZ-FSE D-4 rated 114 kW (155 PS); a 2,362 cc 2AZ-FSE followed in September 2005. The T270 dropped the liftback, and its British-built wagon came back to Japan only for a short run, built there from July to October 2011 and sold from that September with the 2.0 Valvematic 3ZR-FAE. Burnaston ended Avensis output in 2018 after more than twenty years, and the Camry took the slot in Europe.
