STORY

The Aygo was Toyota's share of a city-car bargain with PSA Peugeot Citroen. The two forged the TPCA joint venture in 2002, and on 28 February 2005 the Kolin plant in the Czech Republic started building the Aygo beside the near-identical Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1, with 100,000 of the 300,000 annual capacity earmarked for Toyota; all three were shown at the 2005 Geneva motor show. The first generation ran as AB10, then AB20 and AB30 after facelifts, until the AB40 took over in 2014 with the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder brief and a bolder X-shaped face. Kolin built 786,398 cars of the first Aygo and 679,474 of the second before the hatchback was dropped in 2021 in favour of the crossover-styled Aygo X.
