Belta

2005 – 2025

A compact sedan name used twice by Toyota. The first Belta was a Japanese-market small saloon sold from 2005 to 2012, sharing its design with the Vios and Yaris sedan. The name returned in 2021 on a rebadged Suzuki Ciaz sold in Africa.

The Story

Why the Belta matters

Toyota launched the Belta in Japan in late November 2005 as the local name of its small XP90 sedan, sold as the Vios in China and Southeast Asia and as the Yaris sedan in other export markets. In Japan it offered 1.0 litre three-cylinder and 1.3 litre petrol engines, including a four-wheel-drive version, and was replaced in June 2012 by the Corolla Axio. Production for export continued until July 2016. The name was revived in November 2021 for a different car, a Suzuki Ciaz built in India and sold with Toyota badges in Africa, with a 1.5 litre K15B petrol engine. That second Belta was discontinued in the first half of 2025 with no direct replacement.
