STORY

Toyota met the early-1980s four-wheel-drive boom without designing a small off-roader of its own. From 1 April 1980 the Blizzard was a Daihatsu Taft, in production since 1974, assembled by Daihatsu and fitted with Toyota's 2,188 cc L-series four-cylinder SOHC diesel rated 72 PS, a net figure in Toyota's own tables, and sold through Toyota Vista Store. A ladder frame carried leaf-sprung live axles at both ends, bodies were canvas-top or van, and an FRP top with a sunroof arrived in October 1981. The LD20 of 7 May 1984 moved to the bigger Daihatsu Rugger, still an OEM supply, with a 2,446 cc 2L diesel at 83 PS and a 96 PS 2L-T turbo from September 1985. Production stopped in April 1990.
