STORY

Toyota opened its bZ battery-electric series with the bZ4X Concept at Auto Shanghai on 19 April 2021 and detailed the production car on 29 October 2021, built on an e-TNGA platform developed with Subaru, which sold the twin as the Solterra. Japanese sales started on 12 May 2022 from the Motomachi plant, and private buyers could take the car only on a KINTO subscription; outputs were 150 kW front-drive or 160 kW with twin motors, drawing on a 71.4 kWh pack. A hub bolt defect filed on 23 June 2022 covered 112 Japanese cars and halted production until 6 October, with KINTO deliveries resuming on 26 October. Dealers began selling the car outright on 13 November 2023, and the 2025 update raised the battery to 74.7 kWh.
