STORY
The Cavalier was not a Toyota design. It was the Chevrolet Cavalier, assembled by General Motors in the United States and sold in Japan with a Toyota badge under the bilateral agreement the two companies signed in November 1993; Toyota's own lineage record names General Motors Corporation as the manufacturer. Deliveries began in January 1996, the car converted to right-hand drive, the indicator stalk moved across and the bowtie swapped for a Toyota emblem, with a 2,392 cc T2 four of 150 PS driving the front wheels through a four-speed automatic in coupe and sedan bodies. Distribution ran through the Toyota Store channel, roughly 1,100 outlets across 51 dealerships. Toyota forecast 20,000 sales a year and sold about 37,000 in total before dropping the car in 2000.
