ST165 (1988-1991)

ST165 Group A · 1988–19914WD

The ST165 was Toyota Team Europe's first Group A Celica GT-Four, making its WRC debut at the 1988 Tour de Corse. Its breakthrough came at the 1989 Rally Australia, Toyota's first WRC victory with the car, and Carlos Sainz used it to win Toyota's maiden Drivers' World Championship in 1990, adding a second in 1990 alongside team-mates including Juha Kankkunen. It laid the foundation for Toyota's early-1990s rally dominance against Lancia's Delta Integrale.

STORY

The Celica GT-Four was Toyota's turbocharged all-wheel-drive Group A rally weapon that dominated the early 1990s World Rally Championship. It delivered drivers' titles for Carlos Sainz and Juha Kankkunen and a manufacturers' crown in 1993-1994. A restrictor-cheating device on the ST205 led to Toyota's controversial 1995 ban.
