1400 T (TA20 JP)

A20 · 1970–1972RWD

Entry point to the first-generation Celica in Japan, the 1400 T carried a 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, rear-wheel drive and a manual gearbox. It was sold only from 1970 to 1972, below the 1600 cars that filled most of the range. Buyers chose it for the new coupe shape rather than for performance.

STORY

The Celica was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1970, alongside the Carina, and went on sale in Japan that December. The name comes from the Latin coelica, meaning heavenly. The first generation, coded A20 and A30, offered 1.4 to 2.2 litre engines, including the twin-cam 1.6 litre 2T-G. The all-wheel-drive GT-Four arrived in Japan in October 1986 on the ST165, and the line moved through seven generations to the T230 of 1999. The last Celica was built on 21 April 2006.
