1600 GT 2T-G (TA22 JP)

A20 · 1970–1977RWD

The 1600 GT was the sporting Japanese coupe of the first Celica, built from 1970 to 1977 around the twin-cam 2T-G 1.6-litre four. It drove the rear wheels through a manual gearbox. The twin-cam head separated it from the single-cam 1600 ST sold beside it.

STORY

The Celica was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1970, alongside the Carina, and went on sale in Japan that December. The name comes from the Latin coelica, meaning heavenly. The first generation, coded A20 and A30, offered 1.4 to 2.2 litre engines, including the twin-cam 1.6 litre 2T-G. The all-wheel-drive GT-Four arrived in Japan in October 1986 on the ST165, and the line moved through seven generations to the T230 of 1999. The last Celica was built on 21 April 2006.
